A Complete Kitchen Renovation Designed for Modern Family Living
Earlier this year, we completed a contemporary kitchen renovation in Esher, Surrey, as part of a full home transformation. What began as a dark, enclosed kitchen is now an open, light-filled space — beautifully reimagined to reflect how this family loves to live, cook, and entertain.
With a new extension forming part of the architectural plans, we were able to completely redesign the layout, bringing in natural light and creating a free-flowing connection between the kitchen, dining room, and landscaped garden.
The Design: Sleek, Functional & Contemporary
The new kitchen combines bold design with practical functionality. The cabinetry features a black matt finish with integrated stainless steel handles, paired with white quartz work surfaces for a crisp, contemporary look. A light grey concrete-effect laminate breakfast bar softens the contrast and adds texture to the space.
At the heart of the kitchen sits a large island, positioned to face the garden and main living area. The hob is built into the island, allowing the cook to enjoy garden views or chat with family and guests — perfect for both everyday use and entertaining.
Every appliance was carefully researched and selected to enhance modern family living, including:
- A warming drawer for effortless hosting
- 2 x Siemens Studioline Ovens providing extensive functionality, including an Air Fryer option.
- Tall integrated fridge and freezer to accommodate weekly shopping
- A secondary built-under fridge near the sink and coffee station, offering convenience for guests and easy access to drinks.
- A dual zone wine chiller in the dining room, perfect positioning to grab that cheeky red or white during a fun-filled dinner party.
The result is a kitchen that’s not only beautiful but also incredibly practical.
Connecting Spaces: From Kitchen to Dining to Garden
The newly created open-plan design flows seamlessly through crittall-style glass doors into the dining room, ensuring the spaces feel connected yet defined.
Built-in bench seating provides a comfortable spot for relaxed family meals, while bar stools at the island invite conversation and casual dining. For larger gatherings, the dining room remains very much part of the action — open, sociable, and full of light.
Both the kitchen and dining spaces open directly onto the newly landscaped rear garden, creating an idyllic setting for summer entertaining or peaceful weekend breakfasts outdoors.
The Transformation: From Dark & Disjointed to Bright & Inviting
Before the renovation, the kitchen felt enclosed and lacked natural light. Through thoughtful architectural design by Heritage Architecture, the entire space was opened up — allowing sunlight to flood through and creating clear sightlines throughout the ground floor.
The transformation is nothing short of remarkable: a once tired, segmented kitchen has become the heart of the home, perfectly tailored to modern living and family connection.
